Kampnagel is Germany’s largest production and performance facility for national and international freelance artists and is one of the most reputed venues for the performing arts. In 1984, after the Deutsche Schauspielhaus left the venue, the former crane factory was rebuilt into a multifunctional theatre complex. Each season, Kampnagel, with its six stages, cinema, rehearsal spaces and restaurant, attracts tens of thousands of visitors.
Kampnagel offers a wide and varied programme, from international guest performances, the summer festival and series of events, to productions by freelance theatre groups in Hamburg, to supporting youth theatre and upcoming artists. It covers a wide spectrum of aesthetic standpoints and groundbreaking trends not only in theatre, dance and performance, but also in music, the visual arts and architecture.
Kampnagel is a productive laboratory for ideas, a think tank, a place for controversy, but also a vibrant concert hall, music lounge and club. Here new formats are worked on which seek contemporary forms of public presentation, communication, interaction, participation and knowledge transfer.
