Lecture with Knut Ove Arntzen
The lecture looks in detail at the question of how scenic landscapes interplay with Nordic light, with reference to the changes in the landscape during the four seasons. The focus will be on how these landscapes are expressed in Arctic drama from Symbolism to Situationism Examples of this are site-specific performances like adaptations of dramatic struggles between man and nature on both a real and metaphorical level. This is evident, for example, in the productions of Knut Hamsun’s works adapted by Jon Fosse as well as in new dance and performance art.
Knut Ove Arntzen, born 1950, professor in theatre studies at the University of Bergen, Norway. He is a theatre critic and has been a scientific consultant to the Bergen International Theatre and Les 20 Jours du Théâtre à Risque in Canada. Arntzen has been a regular visiting professor to teach postmodern theatre at the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania as well as to the Theatre Academies in Helsinki and Oslo, and he published his latest book in 2007 in Norwegian: »Theatre of Marginality, on Directing and ambient Strategies in a Nordic Perspective«.

12Karamasows - Kristian Smeds, von Krahl Theatre
Love, death, passion, religion, guilt, good versus evil. Inspired by »The Brothers of Karamazow«, Kristian Smeds and his fierce Estonian performers of the next generation go deep down and far beyond the massive themes of Dostojevsky‘s novel. In search of the Russian soul and the essence of the human kind the 12 Karamazovian spirits transform the stage into a powerful scenic rock concert. Wake up Dostojevsky - here come the 12KARAMAZOWS! Kristian Smed is the internationally most acknowledged Finnish theatre director. His energetic and unique theatre language has gained recognition across Europe in the past couple of years, e.g. in Belgium, France, Germany, Austria and in the Baltic States. In spring 2011 he received the XII Europe Theatre Prize for New Theatrical Realities.

Worship - Nya Rampen
Nya Rampen takes hold of the most renowned plays of all time, taking a look at mortal sins through Shakespeare’s tragedies. What does Nietzsche’s famous quote »God is dead« mean to the modern world that is struggling in a chaos after the humanistic era? The scepticism nurtured by postmodernists has been overcome by populist right-wing and religious fundamentalism, as people are searching for easily understandable all-encompassing answers.
WORSHIP! examines the characteristic human need to believe in and belong to something, be it a religion, an ideology or art. Nya Rampen ponders why fiction such as Shakespeare’s tragedies still has such a hold on audiences. Do we need stories in order to understand reality? Is the theatre slowly becoming our church?
The Finnish Theatre company Nya Rampen was founded 12 years ago in Helsinki and is now based in Berlin. With their latest project CONTE D’AMOUR, which was developed in association with the Swedish group INSTITUTET, they have been invited to numerous European festivals and were awarded this year’s main prize at the theatre festival Impulse leading to an invitation to the Berlin Theatertreffen 2012.
